30 for 30-Day 7

My grandmother was always such a classy lady.  She had 4 closets in her bedroom (I think that my grandfather used 1 of them) and everything was organized: cedar closet for wool, fur and dresses, accessories closet for pocketbooks, jewelry and shoes and then her regular closet with all of her day to day clothing.  She was so well dressed and enjoyed it very much.  She had a massive stroke in 2001 which left her unable to live on her own.  She lost all short term memory.  She was left a shell of what she had been.  She lived for another 8 years in this state.  It was as if she had Alzheimer's.  We had to clean out her house and sell it, along with most of her belongings.  She no longer needed 3 closets worth of clothing, since she could no longer dress herself.  My mom and my mother's sister became her caretakers.  I was 22.

My grandmother died on October 11, 2009.  It was my and Damien's first wedding anniversary.  She died with her sister and my mother in the room with her.  She died peacefully.  Unfortunately, I only have a few pieces of my grandmother's wardrobe.  Nine years ago, I didn't have the foresight to know that I would want to have many of her things, for sentimental reasons and also for plain fashion reasons.  As I said, I was 22.

I did manage to end up with a 2 of her wool blazers.  I love them.  They are just the tiniest bit too small for me (when my gram died, I believe she stood about 4'8"; I am 5'10").  But I love them just the same.  I don't have a cedar closet, I have only 1 closet, but I will do my darndest to keep these coats in good condition and will wear them proudly knowing that they came from one classy lady.

*The new way that I am approaching this whole 30 for 30 remix challenge is to simply wear whatever works for me (and fits) until I reach 30 items.  I think once I get there, I will post my updated list and then stick to those 30 items.  I did map out some ideas and I am excited about some of the looks that I came up with.  I also was able to try some things on last night to be sure that they fit.  I will be now adding a few more skirts into the mix as I was pleasantly surprised to find that not 1 but 2 of my pencil skirts still fit me!

  1. What a nice post! I am lucky to have a few outerwear pieces from my grandmother as well. I get more compliments on her suede jacket than any other thing I own!

I love the way you put that sweater over a dress. I have some sweaters that I don't wear because they creep up and show my tummy--this is a great solution for those! :)
